PlaceHollywood district name
The place called Hollywood began as a small logging community named Derby [1]. In 1911 the lumber baron Frederick Stimson urged that it be renamed Hollywood [1]. He was putting up a vacation house on his farm just south of NE 145th Street, and he is said to have wanted the new name because of the many holly trees he had set out beside his driveway [1]. The house was finished in 1912 and named Stimson Manor, while the farm became Hollywood Farm [1]. Stimson ran a dairy there, later adding chickens and hogs, and after he died in 1921 the land stayed with his family for another ten years before it was sold in 1931 [1]. It is said the manor itself served as a speakeasy for a time during Prohibition [1]. The Hollywood Schoolhouse was built in 1912, a large brick building that taught students for just a few years before too few of them remained and it shut [1].
