North of Green Lake, Interstate 5 runs through the north end of Seattle. In the Roosevelt and Green Lake area it meets Ravenna Boulevard and SR 522, the highway along the north side of Lake Washington. At Northgate, the reversible express lanes that run in the median from Downtown Seattle merge back into the mainline as HOV lanes, and the freeway passes west of Northgate Mall and its light rail station. At Jackson Park it meets SR 523 on 145th Street, the northern city limit of Seattle. The section from north Seattle to Everett opened on February 3, 1965, built partly over the old Seattle–Everett Interurban Railway. It started out six lanes wide. Congestion grew, and in 1966 the stretch from Northgate to modern-day Shoreline was widened to eight lanes. [1]
