Evergreen Point Floating Bridge (SR 520)

SR-520 · Capitol Hill to Hunts Point
“
This is the longest floating bridge in the world — a floating span over seven thousand seven hundred feet long, opened in twenty sixteen.
49 s

The first floating bridge on this crossing opened on August 28, 1963, carrying State Route 520 over Lake Washington between Seattle and Medina [1]. It was built to last fifty years, and it did, but by 2010 it was carrying nearly seven times the fifteen thousand cars a day it was designed for [1]. Its shoulders were two feet wide in places, which meant a breakdown on the span stranded every driver caught on it [1]. By the 1990s the talk turned to replacing it, and in 2003 planners settled on a new bridge a few dozen feet north of the old one [1]. Pontoons were cast in Aberdeen beginning in February 2011, and the finished structure opened to traffic on April 25, 2016 [1]. It runs 7,710 feet, holds 77 pontoons, and Guinness World Records certified it as the longest floating bridge anywhere [1]. Its official name is the Governor Albert D. Rosellini Bridge [1].
