StretchI-90 — Edgewick to Rockdale
Edgewick was an unincorporated community in King County. Its name stitched together two settler surnames, Vinnedge and Weeks. A post office went in during 1912 and stayed until 1919. Then a dam gave way, a failure locals called the Boxley Blowout, and the town was wiped out entirely. I-90 follows the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River, then climbs on two high viaducts to Snoqualmie Pass. Just south of the pass, in the Cascade Range, sits the ghost town of Rockdale, so called because rock was plentiful where the town first stood. Its post office opened in 1912 and closed in 1915. Rockdale stood at the western mouth of the Snoqualmie Tunnel, which the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific built between 1912 and 1914. Tunnel and corridor make up a rail trail inside Iron Horse State Park. [1]
