Old Totem Lake mall limped along for years — then they tore into it and built a whole new village of shops and apartments.

Locals around Kirkland knew the place as Totem Lake Malls, a lower enclosed mall and an upper strip of shops that shared the name [1]. Ground was broken in June 1972, and the first stores opened the following May, with the rest of the lower mall following later that month [1]. The design leaned on an Indian longhouse theme, with Northwest Coast art elements and an interior by John Graham & Company [1]. A snow storm in 1997 caved in part of the lower mall's roof, set off the sprinklers and put three inches of water through the building, which is how the original wood parquet floor became ceramic tile [1]. Village At Totem Lake, LLC bought the property in 2015, and the redevelopment that followed produced a mixed-use center with retail, restaurants, offices and on-site residential [1]. The first Sweetgreen in the Pacific Northwest opened here in 2024 [1].
