Short answers

  • Do I need chains?

Only when WSDOT posts a sign that requires them for your vehicle. “Traction tires advised” requires nothing; “traction tires required” requires approved traction tires or chains; “chains required” requires chains on two-wheel-drive vehicles. Each pass page shows the sign now, both ways.

  • Is AWD enough?

Only with approved traction tires on all four wheels, all wheels engaged, and chains carried in the vehicle. Under “chains required on all vehicles” AWD is not exempt.

  • What do the signs mean?

From least to most: traction tires advised, traction tires required, chains required except all-wheel drive, chains required on all vehicles, and closed. Vehicles over 10,000 lb carry chains all winter whatever is posted.
