Sign now: “No restrictions” both ways
No restriction is posted, but over 10,000 lb you must still carry chains here from November 1 to April 1.
Rule: WAC 204-24-050
The all-winter chain rule is for vehicles over 10,000 lb; AWD cars must still carry chains to use their exemption.
Traction tires are recommended for passenger vehicles, including all-wheel and four-wheel drive, but not required to proceed. Semi-trucks and other large vehicles must have traction tires on, or chains or an approved alternative fitted, and oversize loads are not allowed through at all.
Source: WSDOT · Tires & chainsApproved traction tires are required on passenger vehicles under 10,000 GVW — an eighth of an inch of tread and an M&S or All Season label with a mountain or snowflake symbol. Without them you fit chains or an approved alternative. Over 10,000 GVW, chains or an approved alternative are required.
Source: WSDOT · Tires & chainsFront- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles chain up. All-wheel and four-wheel drive under 10,000 GVW are exempt while traction tires are on all wheels and all wheels are engaged — and must still carry chains in the vehicle. At “all vehicles” nobody is exempt; WSDOT calls that the last step before a pass closes.
Source: WSDOT · Tires & chainsFrom November 1 to April 1, every vehicle over 10,000 GVWR must carry enough chains to meet the rule on US 2 between Index (MP 36) and Dryden (MP 108) — whether or not a requirement is posted that day.
