Tolls, HOV lanes and wind closures

  • Tolled in both directions, and the rate moves

Tolls are collected in both directions on the SR 520 bridge, and the rate changes with the time of day — lower at night, at weekends and on holidays. A Good To Go! pass pays the lowest rate; Pay By Mail is $2 higher, and Pay By Plate adds 25 cents a trip. Vehicles with more than two axles pay more.

  • Where today's rate comes from

Good To Go! publishes the rate table for every tolled road, bridge and tunnel in Washington, this one included, and that table is what the toll is charged from. It is not reproduced here, because a rate typed onto a page is wrong the first time it changes.

  • HOV lanes

The inside lanes are HOV lanes — carpools, vanpools, buses and motorcycles. WSDOT does not fix one statewide number for how many people that takes: the requirement is whatever the sign on the lane says while HOV rules are in force, so read the sign rather than a rule of thumb.

  • Wind closures

WSDOT closes a floating bridge when the wind gets high enough, and the closure arrives as a WSDOT alert — which is the Alerts box on this page. WSDOT publishes no wind speed for this crossing, so this page quotes none; if the bridge is closing, the alert above is where it says so.

Alternate route

The I-90 floating bridge is the untolled cross-lake crossing. It is longer from most of north Seattle.
