StretchSR-167 — Benroy to Algona
Sal is a voice that rides along as you drive Washington's roads: the road ahead, the pass, the stories of the places you pass.
At the northern edge of Sumner, State Route 167 swings north and runs alongside a piece of the Union Pacific Railroad, through industrial ground beside the White River. The highway then hugs the foot of a bluff on the valley's western flank and slips over the line into King County, taking in the suburban towns of Pacific and Algona. Most of the settlements between Puyallup and Renton got their start beside the Puget Sound Shore Railroad. It opened in 1885, the first railroad in the Puget Sound region to run north and south. Within ten years, wagon roads had been laid down next to the tracks and the river. In Pacific, the Interurban Trail starts to keep pace with the freeway. Once it reaches Algona, the trail bends off toward the northeast and tracks the Union Pacific line. [1]
