PlaceHix's General Merchandise
Sal is a voice that rides along as you drive Washington's roads: the road ahead, the pass, the stories of the places you pass.
Arthur and Pauline Hix arrived from Indiana in 1905 with plans for a small home and a store, and found a village already settled against the hillside above the Snoqualmie River. A Methodist church, a saloon, a tiny schoolhouse. Then the railroad planners drew their line so that the rails would have entered by the front door and left by the back. A newspaper of the day noted the fine shipping facilities this would have afforded, and that Mr. Hix would rather move anyway. So the building went onto logging skids and braces and crept south about half a mile over two months. Their daughter Velma, later Duvall's postmaster, lived in the family house hauled up with it. The store still stands. [1]
